SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures “Made Local” – Judith Vollmer
DESCRIPTION:Get tickets to attend IN-PERSON or ONLINE. \n\nInspired by the legacy of Cesare Pavese\, Judith Vollmer’s The Pavese Stone unfolds across the Italian countryside and burrows deep into the interior landscapes of memory\, mortality\, and connection. This is a vivid\, haunting\, and intimate meditation on the porous boundary between life and death\, the longing for communion\, the brutality of reality\, and equally\, the quiet grace that resides within it. The Pavese Stone finds beauty in the ordinary by elevating moments of stillness and loss into sacred space. \nJudith Vollmer’s seventh book of poetry\, The Pavese Stone\, is forthcoming from Alice James Books in March 2026. Vollmer is recipient of poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Her poetry\, reviews\, and essays have been published in Plume\, Rhino\, Barrow Street\, The Georgia Review\, The Women’s Review of Books\, Agni\, Prairie Schooner\, Pleiades\, and elsewhere. For three decades Vollmer co-edited the international poetry journal 5 AM. She lives in Pittsburgh’s Nine Mile Run watershed.

SUMMARY:Seán Patrick Duffy presents Saying No to Carnegie: Why Wheeling\, WV Rejected a Carnegie Library
DESCRIPTION:Once the richest man on the planet\, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to build libraries\, museums\, and other public buildings across the United States. He attempted to do the same for a public library in a small city 55 miles south of Pittsburgh\, but Wheeling\, West Virginia\, turned him down. In this presentation\, we will explore why this offer was controversial in Wheeling\, one of many places to decline a library donation.\n  \nSeán Patrick Duffy is the adult programming director at the Ohio County Public Library and the executive director of the Wheeling Academy of Law and Science (WALS) Foundation at the First State Capitol\, both in Wheeling\, West Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and an MBA from Wheeling Jesuit University and a JD from the Washington College of Law at the American University. He is the author or editor of four books and numerous articles on local history. One of the founders of ArchivingWheeling.org\, Duffy is editor of the Upper Ohio Valley Historical Review.\n  \nThis program will take place in the South Wing Reading Room on the 2nd Floor.

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures “Made Local” – Adriana Ramírez
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend IN-PERSON or ONLINE. \n\nA powerful chronicle of Colombia’s descent into decades of civil war through the lens of an intimate\, multi-generational tale of upheaval and betrayal. \nWhen presumed president-elect Jorge Eliécer Gaitán\, champion of the working class and harbinger of a new era of progressive social change\, is assassinated on the eve of Colombia’s 1948 presidential election\, the capital is plunged into bloodshed. So begins a singularly brutal period of Colombia’s history known simply as la violencia—a bloody civil war that spawned decades of turmoil and splintered the country into ever-shifting factions. \nThe Violence is an intimate history of this conflict—told not from the political center of the war but from the mountainous finca that Adriana E. Ramírez’s family tended to for generations\, and through the eyes of her formidable grandmother\, Esther. With startling lyricism\, Ramírez illuminates the specter of violence—from guerilla warfare to the brutalities found so often in romantic relationships to the spontaneous and senseless violence steeped into everyday Colombian life during this period—and the threat that it poses to a country\, and a family\, that is trying to stay whole. Gracefully braiding together macrohistory\, family history\, and personal narrative\, Adriana E. Ramírez traces these parallel stories of upheaval in a sweeping portrait of a country and family in flux. \n\nAdriana E. Ramírez is a writer\, critic\, and poet based in Pittsburgh\, where she writes a column and edits “InReview” for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She is the winner of the 2015 PEN/Fusion Emerging Writer’s Prize\, a former critic-at-large for the Los Angeles Times’s Book Section\, and the cofounder of Aster(ix) Journal. Her writing has also appeared in The Atlantic\, The Boston Globe\, People\, ESPN’s The Undefeated (now Andscape)\, LitHub\, Guernica\, Nerve\, and elsewhere. She once lost terribly on Jeopardy!.

A recording will be made available after the lecture on the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures YouTube channel. \n\nFrom the prizewinning rising legal star\, the deeply researched and definitive book on the way the media and police distract us from what matters \nJoin Alec Karakatsanis for a discussion of how we can think about copaganda in 2026\, including the role of civil rights law and propaganda in times of rising authoritarianism\, as well as how civil rights lawyers and communities can use the arts\, storytelling\, and narrative to resist and build human connection. \n“Copaganda” is a special kind of propaganda employed by police\, prosecutors\, and news media. It stokes fear of police-recorded crime and distorts society’s responses to it. As the United States incarcerates five times more people per capita than it did in 1970—despite record low crime rates—a sprawling and profitable punishment bureaucracy spends a lot of time and money to manipulate what we think that bureaucracy does and why. \nPittsburgh native Alec Karakatsanis is the Founder and Executive Director of Civil Rights Corps.  He has pioneered constitutional civil rights cases to challenge the size\, power\, profit\, and everyday brutality of the punishment bureaucracy across the United States. He is a graduate from Yale College with a degree in Ethics\, Politics\, & Economics and Harvard Law School\, where he was a Supreme Court Chair of the Harvard Law Review Before founding Civil Rights Corps\, Alec was a public defender representing impoverished people accused of crimes in Alabama and Washington\, D.C. Among other awards\, Alec was named the 2016 Trial Lawyer of the Year by Public Justice and received the prestigious 2023 New Frontier Award from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.   \nHe is the author of two books and also writes Alec’s Copaganda Newsletter. Alec likes playing the piano and soccer\, collecting rocks\, singing\, growing flowers\, creating mosaics from dried flowers\, repeating the same jokes until they become funny\, writing poetry\, and making weird paintings on large pieces of wood and metal. You can watch Alec talk about Copaganda in the media on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and The Breakfast Club. You can also watch Alec discuss the groundbreaking Right2Hug campaign\, and how civil rights lawyering can challenge authoritarianism.

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures “Made Local” – Michael Lowenthal
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend IN-PERSON. A recording will be made available after the lecture on the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures YouTube channel. \n\nGrowing up in places where his family had no past\, and met mostly by silence from his Holocaust-refugee grandparents\, Michael Lowenthal longed to be from somewhere. Then he realized he was gay and felt displaced from his own displaced family. Place Envy—his first book of essays after five acclaimed books of fiction—chronicles his quest for orientation in the world: as an agnostic Jew\, as a queer traveler and lover\, and as a writer who can tell or twist the truth. Yearning for a queer lineage\, he obsesses about an uncle who perished at Bergen-Belsen but then finds\, in his grandmother’s German hometown\, a more surprising legacy. He lives with a Pennsylvania Amish family; accompanies blind gay men on a Mexican cruise; plays jazz with Sun Ra\, the Afrofuturist who claimed to hail from Saturn; and pursues a clarifying love affair in Brazil. Collectively\, these essays recount Lowenthal’s many journeys of dislocation and relocation: to foreign countries and subcultures and to the riskiest shores of family and self. \nMichael Lowenthal is the author of the novels The Same Embrace\, Avoidance\, Charity Girl\, and The Paternity Test and of the short story collection Sex with Strangers. His writing has appeared in Tin House\, Ploughshares\, The New York Times Magazine\, The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post\, Out\, and many other publications. His stories have been widely anthologized in such volumes as Lost Tribe: Jewish Fiction from the Edge\, Bestial Noise: The Tin House Fiction Reader\, and Best New American Voices.
