DESCRIPTION:Indian cuisine is as old as the civilization (~4\,000 years) and as varied as its population. Typical of the cuisine is an integral role of aromatic spices and herbs. There is a penchant for spicy curries eaten daily with rice or wheat bread\, depending on the region\, as well as the widespread practice of vegetarianism among some religious groups. The cuisine reflects the remarkable regional diversity caused over the centuries by varied topography\, climate\, religions\, and cultural customs\, as well as the historical influences of India’s occupation by Portuguese\, Mogul (Muslim)\, and British regimes. This presentation will discuss the description\, cultivation\, propagation\, and culinary use of common and unique spices and herbs used in Indian cooking and factors that contributed to the regional diversity will also be reviewed.

He holds an MFA from the University of Pittsburgh and is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Memphis. \nThis event is part of our Latin and Hispanic Heritage Month 2026 programming.

SUMMARY:Civics Lecture Series: Monsters\, Bots\, and Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Halloween\, this multi-speaker symposium explores the real and imagined “bogeymen” haunting today’s information landscape. From zombie narratives that refuse to die to misinformation spreading from “inside the house\,” speakers examine how flawed data\, viral rumors\, and misleading media shape public understanding\, professional practice\, and scientific discourse. Presented with CivicCLP\, this program highlights why media and scientific literacy are more important than ever. \nThis event will take place in the North Wing Music Room on the second floor of Main Library as well as virtually\, and will be recorded for later viewing. \n\nSpeaker Bios: \n\n\n\nSean Barill\, M.A.\, is a writer and cultural anthropologist whose research engages with topics of ecological violence and political communication in the context of the post-industrial landscape. In particular\, this work seeks to expand upon our notion of human agency from the vantage of the environmental sacrifice zone\, drawing on ethnographic and archival methods to demonstrate the creative forces of the social body vis-a-vis the deleterious conditions of the present. His current project employs the figure of the monster as both a rhetorical device and analytical category to comment on the psychological\, commercial\, and cosmological dimensions of economic recovery efforts in rural Appalachia. Outside of his academic commitments\, Sean has collaborated on public-facing educational projects through the Carnegie Museum of Natural History\, Lincoln Park Zoo\, and Literacy Pittsburgh. Some of Sean’s public writing can be found here.\nSamantha Totoni\, PhD\, MPH\, is the Research Director for the Communication Technology Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Communication. She leads research on how communities can learn from one another in responding to online manipulation and propaganda. Samantha was a 2025 Mass Media Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

DESCRIPTION:Do you have completed puzzles taking up space that you would like to swap for fresh\, new puzzles to solve? Join us for an afternoon of puzzle-related activities and a puzzle swap! Donate your gently used puzzles\, and pick up a new puzzle to get working on. This program will take place in the South Wing Reading Room on the Second Floor. Activities and puzzle donations will begin at 12:00PM\, puzzles will be released for selection starting at 1:00PM. If you would like to donate your puzzles before the day of the program\, feel free to bring them to the New and Featured Desk on the First Floor\, and let us know they are for the Puzzle Swap.
