DESCRIPTION:LDA of PA is excited to offer its Early Literacy Instruction program for students in kindergarten through second grade at CLP – Hill District and CLP – Brookline. Pairing up to four students per tutor and utilizing multi-sensory reading tutoring techniques\, this program teaches reading\, spelling\, and handwriting in fun\, interactive\, and multisensory ways. The curriculum includes sight words\, sound mastery\, letter formation\, phonics\, vocabulary\, fluency\, reading comprehension\, the alphabetic principle\, and more. \nStudents that need reading support at specific grade levels can join fun and interactive classes:   \nAt CLP – Brookline we offer tutoring Mondays and Wednesdays 3:15-4 PM ; and Tuesdays and Fridays 3-5 PM.   \nAt CLP – Hill District we offer tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-5 PM. \nStudents will be expected to attend 2 sessions per week at their chosen library to make significant progress in their literacy skills. Cooke as the 2026 Vivian Ann Davidson Hewitt Lecturer \nCLP is proud to announce the third annual Vivian Ann Davidson Hewitt Lecture intended to honor and celebrate the first Black librarian at CLP\, who served the Hill District community in the 1940s. The Hewitt Lecture is presented in partnership with the Allegheny County Library Association and the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Computing and Information. \nNicole A. Cooke is the Augusta Baker Endowed Chair and Professor at University of South Carolina. Her research and teaching interests include human information behavior\, critical cultural information literacy\, LIS Education and equity and social justice in librarianship. She is the Founding Editor of ALA Editions/Neal-Schuman’s Critical Cultural Information Studies series. Her latest book is The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship: When They Dared to Be Powerful. \nAll attendees are invited to attend a reception following the lecture. The reception will feature activities to reflect on the lecture and a gallery show around the book\, The Legacy of Black Women in Librarianship.
