Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Music Department maintains a collection of Pittsburgh music concert programs dating back to the mid-19th century. They include individual programs stored in file drawers, programs from specific organizations that are bound together, and programs in scrapbooks compiled by individuals or organizations.

 

This index includes most of the concert programs held at Carnegie Library – Main. Concert programs included in bound volumes from various organizations are not fully indexed, but are included in this index as whole volumes:

Pittsburgh concert programs indexed above are housed in several locations:

• A file cabinet in the Music Department, indexed alphabetically by organization.
• A collection of scrapbooks and bound volumes known as “Pittsburgh Concert Programs” held in the Music Department. Click to see the index of volumes:

• The Pittsburgh Music Information File contains a large collection of newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and other ephemera. There are some concert programs in this collection under the names of specific organizations, such as “Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society” or “Organ Players Club of Pittsburgh.”

Pittsburgh Concert Programs that are not fully indexed:

• Bound volumes in the reference stacks of Carnegie Library – Main. The programs inside the volumes are not indexed online, but are indexed in card catalog files in the Music Department. These card catalog files are called “Performers in Pittsburgh” and “Analysis Index.” Contact the Music Department with inquiries.

Concert Programs from the Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh

The Music Department houses 43 volumes of Carnegie Music Hall programs, beginning with the inaugural concert on Nov. 5, 1895 through June 7, 1931. These are facsimiles of the originals that were created to duplicate the layout of the brittle scrapbooks found in the attic of the Carnegie Music Hall in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The creation of these facsimiles was funded with a a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1999–2000, in order to preserve the legacy of Andrew Carnegie.
