Library Resources

What I love about magazines is how I can easily see a variety of ideas and stories in one place. It is so satisfying to gain so much insight so quickly!

As a slow reader, this is an important accomplishment for me. The same is true of sitting with a newspaper. Recently, I learned about a special lizard, international current events and a British sculptor in 20 minutes, through picking and choosing articles from the daily New York Times

In a world ruled by headline skimming and hashtags, I challenge you to read a few paragraphs in and see what happens. You may feel your world expand beyond the buzzwords of today or enjoy a needed break.

As the Library considers materials and safety, physical magazines may be unavailable for the foreseeable future. I hope there comes a day where staff and customers are once again skulking around the Library, trying to find out who has the Sports section. In the meantime, there are plenty of digital periodical offerings to either tide you over or get you hooked for good.

Essence – This Black women’s lifestyle guide features articles on beauty, health, celebrities and more. You can check out this title as an eMagazine on Overdrive/Libby.

Cover of the magazine "Essence" shows a person wearing a large hat and green sash with stars.

The New York Times  – Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh cardholders can access a digital subscription of daily news, microfilm from 2008-present and an interactive mapping tool.

A gray and white subscription box says, "Enjoy a special offer from the New York Times"

The New Yorker Magazine – This national weekly magazine offers a mix of reporting and commentary on politics, foreign affairs, business, technology, popular culture and the arts, along with fictionpoetry and, of course, great cartoons. You can check out this title as an eMagazine on OverDrive/Libby.

Cover of the magazine "The New Yorker" shows a brightly colored illustration of Sojourner Truth sitting next to a table with a vase, surrounded by three hummingbirds.

Smart Photography – Find monthly updates on the world of images from this publication led by professional and amateur photographers alike. You can check out this title as an eMagazine on Overdrive/Libby.

Cover of the magazine "Smart Photography" shows a photo of a purple, green and red bird perched on a mossy branch.
