Genre Guide – Shifter Romance: Love in All Shapes and Sizes

A shifter romance is a romance featuring a relationship between a human and a non-human that can “shift” from a human to something other (or vice versa) either by choice or by curse.

The most classic version of this genre is the love between a human and a werewolf. Usually, the classic Wolfman trope ends in tragedy, where the werewolf is hunted down and dies in the arms of their lover. The main resolution is that the human partner chooses to still love the soul within the shapeshifting partner. Another example would be Beauty and the Beast. In modern shifter tropes, the romance can be between a human and a shifter or between two shifters or between multiples; the stories tend to be very steamy; and they feature a “happily ever after” or “happily for now” conclusion.

In the list below you’ll find a selection of books ranging from werewolf romances to complex reverse-harem romances and all the variations between.

After growing up with nothing, I’ve finally found my path to freedom: I’m a shifter, a warrior who transforms into a monster. All I have to do is survive bootcamp. I didn’t count on my three six-foot-five roommates-slash-trainers. Covered in tattoos, jeweled, and horned, these are like no men I’ve ever dealt with before. They don’t think I belong. They don’t think I can fight. They don’t think I’m strong enough for war. They don’t think I can shift. I’m about to prove them wrong.
