Free to the People!
All Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP) locations offer a Library of Things. A Library of Things is made up of non-traditional materials that cardholders can borrow.
Types of items currently available:
- Outdoor Games, Kits and Activities
- Board Games and Role Playing Games (RPGs)
- Assistive Items
- Musical Instruments*

Borrowing Library of Things Materials
Library cardholders in Allegheny County may borrow Library of Things materials. You can sign up for a free library card here. Borrowing items CLP’s Library of Things follows our current collection and circulation policies. CLP’s complete borrowing policy can be located here. In general, Library of Things materials circulate for three weeks. They can be placed on hold to be picked up at any library location in Allegheny County.

Library of Things collections may be browsed via CLP’s online catalog by selecting the “Library of Things” drop-down menu. For a specific title or item, try using the catalog search function on our website by selecting search on the top right-hand corner, or by searching via our online catalog. If you have a suggestion for an item for CLP’s Library of Things please submit your request via the Suggest a Purchase feature in the online catalog. CLP reviews all purchase suggestions; however, not all suggestions are approved. Please review our Collection Development policy.
Please note – CLP is not accepting Library of Things donations at this time. You can learn more about donations via our policy here.
Most Library of Things materials are portable and can be transported without special considerations. However, some materials are of a considerably larger size and/or weight and may require additional planning when picking up. Currently, these items include:
- Giant Connect Four – This item is 4×4 feet and comes in a large duffel bag
- Stepping Stones – These items come in a large duffel bag
- Cornhole – This item contains two 2×3 feet wood components and comes in a large duffle bag
- Axe Throw & Lawn Darts – This item comes in a large bag

Authors or publishers wishing to bring an item to our attention should follow the Author and Publisher Submission Guidelines.
Selection decisions are made in accordance with the criteria outlined in this policy.
